Waynesville Attractions near the Great Smoky Mountains & Asheville

Our bed and breakfast is located near many attractions in the Asheville & Waynesville area. Come explore the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains! Here are some of our recommendations for things to do in Western North Carolina, all less than 45 minutes away!

Waynesville: Explore the quaint shops and wonderful restaurants in nearby downtown Waynesville with a surprising number of fine galleries and specialty shops. Stop in Whitman's Bakery for a sandwich or pastry. Along with the popular Mast General Store, there are about a dozen galleries and a variety of antique shops, home furnishing centers and locally-owned gift shops. Downtown Waynesville's quaint old buildings take you back to a more leisurely time. When it's time to dine, there is everything from hearty country fare to the local specialty mountain trout, to fine international cuisine and high-end gourmet. See a list of Waynesville galleries and the Downtown Calendar of Events.

Folkmoot USA: North Carolina's Official International Festival, is a two-week celebration in July of the world's cultural heritage through folk music and dance. Held each summer just a few blocks from our bed and breakfast inn, Folkmoot features performances, parades and workshops by more than 350 performers from a dozen or so countries. Go to the Folkmoot website for more.

Biltmore Estate: Just 25 miles away in Asheville is the famous Biltmore Estate with America's largest home, the country's most visited winery, breathtaking gardens and fabulous restaurants. Spend the day exploring more than 8,000 acres. Come back for Festival of Flowers or the Christmas at Biltmore celebration. Go to the Biltmore website for more.

Great Smoky Mountains National Park: World renowned for its diversity of plant and animal life, the beauty of its ancient mountains, and the quality of its remnants of Southern Appalachian mountain culture, this is America’s most visited national park. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a hiker's paradise with over 800 miles of maintained trails ranging from short leg-stretchers to strenuous treks. From the big animals like bears, deer, and elk, down to microscopic organisms, the Smokies have the most biological diversity of any area in the world's temperate zone. The park is a sanctuary for a magnificent array of animal and plant life, all of which is protected for future generations to enjoy. Go to the Great Smokies website for more.

Hiking & Biking: The Waynesville area is a hiker's dream with many trails throughout western North Carolina from beginner to more advanced. Most are within a short drive from our bed and breakfast. Read more about hiking in the Great Smokies. For the best in mountain biking, go to the mountain bike mecca of Tsali Recreation Area.

Bird Watching: Birding is the fastest growing outdoor activity in America. Birds add a fascinating dimension to our surroundings with their color, livliness and music. Because they are wild creatures, they bing an element of nature into our lives.  We draw hundreds of species to the inn with multiple bird feeders around the property. In addition, thousands more species can be observed in the wild at the Smoky Mountain National Park or driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Lake Junaluska: Since 1913, Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center has been the home of thousands of enriching events and worship services. Each year over 150,000 people experience Lake Junaluska through the United Methodist Church ministry programs, church retreats, Annual Conferences and countless other events. Our bed and breakfast inn is a short drive away!

Pisgah National Forest: This is a mecca for vacationers, naturalists and adventurers, offering a wide range of options for your recreating pleasure. Just to mention a few, there's hiking and back-packing, camping, fishing, biking, horse-back riding, swimming, rock-climbing, car-touring, waterfalls, wildlife, historical areas, and a variety of special programs. Read more about Pisgah National Forest.

Maggie Valley: Just 10 minutes away is Maggie Valley, home to Ghost Town in the Sky, musuems, live music, shops and great winter skiing. See the events calendar for Maggie Valley.

Wheels Through Time Museum: This fascinating museum in Maggie Valley sweeps you back in time with its magnificent presentation of vintage all-American motorcycles and automobiles. Downtown Asheville: For more great shopping and dining, explore downtown Asheville with 200+ stores, 30+ art galleries, 50 restaurants, beautiful architecture and talented street entertainers. Read all about Downtown Asheville.

Blue Ridge Parkway: Take a drive on one of America's most scenic roads. Some of most spectacular views of the entire Blue Ridge Parkway is a short drive from our bed and breakfast inn. Take a picnic, explore many hiking trails, and enjoy the fresh cool air of the high elevations.

Golf: We are across the street from Waynesville Country Club and just down the road from Laurel Ridge Country Club. See more golf courses nearby.

Ski: Consistently one of the earliest resorts in the Southeast to open the ski season and the latest to close, thanks to its technologically advanced snowmaking capability, Cataloochee Ski Area is a winter playground for the entire family. With 14 slopes and trails, Cataloochee Ski Area offers mountains of fun for everyone, from skiers to snowboarders, from novices to veterans.

Motorcycle: There is no better way to experience the Smoky Mountains or the ribbon of highway that is the Blue Ridge Parkway than on a Harley. Gryphon Bikes in Maggie Valley offers motorcycle rentals of new and late model Harley-Davidsons by the day, along with three and seven day packages.

Harrahs Casino: Just 30 minutes from our bed and breakfast inn is the action and excitement at Harrah's Cherokee Casino & Hotel. From brand-new games and slots to dazzling favorites like Digital Blackjack and Baccarito, you'll find it at the Cherokee!

Whitewater Rafting: The Southeast's most popular river, the Nantahala (River of the Noonday Sun) is an exciting half-day introduction to whitewater for both first-time rafters and experienced rafters wishing to captain their own raft or adventure duck (inflatable kayak). Over thousands of years, the swift currents of the Nantahala River have carved an incredble gorge, lush with vegetation, in the mountains of western North Carolina. Winding eight miles through this gorge, the clear waters of the Nantahala offer plenty of practice on easy Class II rapids before culminating in the exciting Class III whitewater of the mighty Nantahala Falls. See NOC for more about rafting trips.

Fish: Rushing streams, sparkling rivers, rippled ponds, and serene lakes are plentiful in Haywood County. And a unique feature of the water here is that it all originates here. No water flows into the county. Filled with native mountain trout, the creeks, streams and rivers are ideal for fly fishing. For a guided fly fishing trip, contact Lowe Guide Service or Waynesville Fly Shop.

Horseback Riding: From hourly rides to all-day trips offered by a host of stables, horseback riding is a great way to spend some quality time with family and friends, enjoying some spectacular scenary all the while. Whether traveling on a forested trail in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or through an open field atop a bald, you'll love Horseback Riding through this Appalachian paradise. Check out Cataloochee Ranch for guided horseback rides.

Star Ranch Rescue: This refuge for abused and neglected horses nearby offers horses and goats for adoption. Read more about Star Ranch Rescue.
